Orange and Black by Peter Zappa
Award winner in 2019
Orange and black is a freestanding kinetic metal sculpture that is inspired by two of my favourite artists; Alexander Calder and Isamu Noguchi. I have applied orange and black colouring in a graphic style to bolster the dynamic composition of the sculptures. I have used a simple planar geometric composition to create visual movement as the sculptural components expand and contract as you move around the sculpture.
The two kinetic elements inject the sculpture with autonomous re-composition as it responds to external forces. There is a lyrical visual narrative as their two orbits interact, intersecting in a cat and mouse game and, on the odd occasion, you might see them collide.
