Amber At Work
Medium: oil on linen
Amber at Work' depicts Amber Norrish, Education officer at Bunbury Regional Art Gallery (BRAG). She is also my work colleague and a friend, and I know her to be a passionate and strong presence in the South Western Australian Arts sector. My intentions before meeting with Amber for her portrait sitting was to paint someone who embodied what it looks like to be a strong, capable, and confident person working in the Arts in Western Australia today. In the past, male artists have dominated gallery walls, leadership positions and art prizes, however, according to the 2019 Countess Report, Australian women have reached equity in gender representation for our sector for the first time in history. Amber graciously agreed to a quick sitting one day after work on the grounds of BRAG during one of her busiest weeks of the year; install week for the Iluka Visions High School Exhibition. The pink background is an obvious nod to the Gallery from which Amber works in, but also connects to her pride in her femininity and her sense of self.
