Butterflight' was born from my teaching practice and the current pandemic. it was surreal to be teaching visual art ATAR via Zoom during lockdown in 2020. I had begun a still life painting but was inspired by my students to turned the leaves into butterflies, colours symbolising their personalities as well as referring to the multicoloured butterflies that have disappeared from the west coast since my mother was a child. My aim was to capture the feeling of that day that lockdown lifted with the freedom to move out from behind that curtain! This artwork is also aimed to express empathy for those still experiencing lockdown across our nation and further afield, especially my family.
