If I Were Free
James Wild
Medium: oil on canvas
Title: If I Were Free At the start of the year, I was reflecting on our lives in WA. Remoteness has offered protection, but with it, isolation. Our sense of safety conflicts with that of abstraction; removed from our families, friends and from the outside world. Some months later I visited Bunker Bay and the scene that I'd previously considered now unfolded in front of me. At the end of the boardwalk a lone figure was standing on the end post, appearing to hover above the landscape. They stare beyond the deserted beach, out to the storm and the building waves. What they were contemplating remains unknown, but what they portrayed was all that I had been feeling.
