Shadow And Light 2 - Baigup Wetlands
Karen Prakhoff Rickman
Medium: monoprint: etching ink and beeswax on rag paper mounted on aluminium
My favourite local haunt and inspiration for this monoprint is Baigup Wetlands. Baigup is one of the few remaining wetlands in Perth, providing an important sanctuary for numerous species of birds and reptiles, as well as an escape from the hurly-burly of life. The flooded gums and swamp paperbarks dripping bark are beautifully evocative, embodying uncanny shadow and light. The monoprint process is integral to both the aesthetics and meaning of the work with each layer simultaneously creating and denying form - it speaks of memory, time, loss and renewal. The work evokes a sense of being in the landscape, providing an imaginative and contemplative space for the viewer.
