Softly, Harshly #2
Sally Stoneman
Medium: vermin proof fencing wire, emu feathers
The Vermin Proof fencing wire is a literal and metaphorical symbol of colonisation. It includes the Rabbit proof fence and Dingo proof fences installed across Western Australia to control the movement of the emu, rabbit and dingo into farming lands. It references the European settlement of Australia through the division of the land for the pursuit of agriculture. The European invasion of the continent caused immense suffering to the Indigenous people through loss of homelands and personal freedom resulting in incarceration and genocide. The use of materiality in this work elicits a tactile response to the title of the work “ Softly, Harshly” as we consider our complex future with our environment and the sovereignty of the Indigenous people to this landscape.
