Traversing 4 is one in a series of paintings I made after spending time in the WA landscape. By that I mean physically walking on the land. Moving inland and away from the cooler coastal hues the environmental changes are significant. The landscape becomes more expansive and transitions to earth tones which informed the palette I selected. The foundation of my art practice is the detailed notes I make whilst in the landscape. For this series, Traversing, my writing captured observations of gentle undulations and steep climbs together with the flora and geology of the land. I stain the canvas (using water-based mediums) to make shapes and patterns followed by a top layer of mark making. The end result is my interpretation of that landscape.
